ascension is different in Luke 24:50–53* and Barn. 15.9 (occurring on Sunday, the day of the resurrection); Asc. Is. 9.16 has an interval of 545 days and Ap. Jas. one of 550.7 Luke’s reference to forty days implies a fundamental separation between the period of the appearances and the era of the church. This distinction is important, for example, in the interpretation of Paul’s Damascus vision. Menoud emphasizes the symbolic character of the number forty—it has its origins in Luke’s own reflection.8
